The Atlanta Braves have a date with the San Diego Padres on Friday night at Petco Park.
The bad news is Atlanta has not been playing great baseball so to be right on the necks of Washington in the National League East race is quite a positive. Both the arms and bats can be a bit unpredictable but the 2-1 road loss was completely predictable because the Bravos faced Clayton Kershaw. Julio Teheran gave his team a chance with a complete game effort (eight innings) but scoring on Kershaw proved to be fruitless until the 9th. Atlanta totaled eight hits but the few opportunities the offense had were squandered on double plays until Justin Upton singled in BJ Upton from 3rd with two outs in the 9th. The Braves are hoping Mike Minor can work out the kinks when he heads to the hill to tame San Diego for the second straight time. Minor defeated San Diego 8-3 with two homers allowed over 6.1 innings.

You have to give San Diego plenty of credit for not throwing in the towel despite being buried in the standings. If the Padres can muster a consistent offense going to be a handful for the playoff hopeful squads on their schedule. The Padres chance at a sweep of the visiting Cardinals went by the wayside in a 6-2 defeat Thursday with nothing going well. Odrasimer Despaigne got whacked for the second straight time with all six runs scored on nine hits through 5.2 innings. The offense posted just three hits with Jedd Gyorko and Will Venable blasting back to back long balls in the second. Eric Stults gets his second consecutive start against the Braves on Friday in the series opener. Stults has has a number of issues that have resulted in a 3-13 record with a 5.22 ERA covering 21 outings.
Atlanta simply can't afford a losing streak but this team doesn't always perform as expected. I will give the better team theory a shot in this rematch but don't be surprised by what they do...
