The Atlanta Braves look to pick up ground in the standings with a win at the San Diego Padres on Saturday.
After getting swept away in Los Angeles the Braves are in need of a hot streak to keep Washington from pulling away in the National League East. The start of a hot streak will have to wait another day after a 10-1 defeat at San Diego on Friday night. I think Atlanta should be worrying about Mike Minor who was hit hard for five runs over five frames with three relievers allowing five more. The bats mustered four hits and five BB with Chris Johnson driving in BJ Upton with the lone run. Ervin Santana looks to continue his hot pitching when he squares off with the Padres Saturday night. Santana has been rock solid with a 10-6 record and 3.63 ERA over 20 outings.

San Diego was doing great when the offense was producing a week or so ago but it's difficult to win unless the pitching comes through because scoring is hit or miss (no pun intended). The Padres had no problem hitting Atlanta pitching Friday and the work on the mound was just as impressive. Eric Stults has had his share of struggles in 2014 but threw like an ace with a lone unearned run scored on just two hits through 6.1 innings to pick up a rare win. The offense took care of the rest with Tommy Medica's career night leading the way. Medica smacked two homers and drove in four to cap off a 5-5 night. The Padres hand the ball to Ian Kennedy who has been nearly lights out as of late. Kennedy has emerged from a slow period with quality starts in four of his last five times out while going 8-9 with 3.66 ERA overall.
I know that San Diego could get shutout Saturday because the offense still isn't good but I'd rather take a chance on them at decent odds because the Braves can also struggle at the plate...
