The Chicago White Sox look to continue the drive to .500 with the Texas Rangers visiting on Monday.
The Rangers are probably hoping the season ended Sunday as injuries and poor play making 2014 miserable. The misery continued Sunday in a 4-3, 12 inning defeat at Cleveland as they were swept away at Progressive Field. Yu Darvish gave a single run over seven frames and appeared to be in line for the win before Neftali Perez served up a two run bomb in the bottom of the 9th to knot the score 3-3 with Phil Klein giving up a walkoff solo jack. Three players drove in runs to give Texas a 3-1 lead after two but that was all she wrote. Nick Martinez will be on the hill Monday to face the White Sox for the first time ever. Martinez has struggled on the year with a 1-7 record with an ERA just north of five in 13 starts.
USA TODAY Sports
The White Sox have generally played well the past few weeks as they have been competitive against everyone for the majority of 2014. Chicago has made great strides over last season and should be a tough team to deal with in the future. The future was not Sunday in a 16-3 rout at the hands of visiting Minnesota. Jose Quintana gave up an unearned run over five innings before the next five relievers allowed a laughable 15 runs. The offense totaled eight hits with Dayan Viciedo connecting on a two run jack with Alexei Ramirez driving in the other during a three run 4th inning. The White Sox charge Hector Noesi with controlling the Rangers offense on Monday. Noesi has either looked good or bad in 2014 with a 5-8 record and 5.21 ERA covering 17 outings where the team has gone 8-9.
The White Sox are the better team but neither hurler has thrilling numbers. I guess Chicago has won some with Noesi but laying the chalk makes me tremble...
