The Boston Red Sox pay a visit to the west coast to take the field with the Los Angeles Angels.
It's hard to believe the Red Sox have fallen so far after winning the World Series a season ago but the offense and pitching aren't in harmony this is what can happen. It happened again Thursday in a 5-2 defeat at St Louis with starter Brandon Workman giving up four runs on six hits and a pair of BB over 5.1 innings to take the loss. The bats produced eight hits and two base on balls with Christian Vazquez and Mike Napoli singling in runs. Allen Webster gets the call to the mound against the heavy hitting Angels in the opener of a weekend set. Webster is 1-1 in two starts with a 6.75 ERA with five hits and eleven BB allowed in eight frames.

The Angels have the misfortune of being in the American League West with the Athletics which means the two best records in the game are breathing down each other's neck on a daily basis. The A's won Thursday and picked up a game in the standings so Los Angeles can't afford to fall too far behind. Thursday's loss was a breakdown in all areas with CJ Wilson still having issues with four runs plated on six hits and four base on balls through 5.2 frames of a 7-0 loss to the LAD. The bats ran in to a red hot Hyun-Jin Ryu and managed a pair of doubles and two walks. The Angels give Friday's series opening start versus visiting Boston to Jered Weaver. Weaver isn't the power pitcher he was but he has been winning with a 12-6 record and 3.59 ERA over 24 outings.
The Angels really need a win in the series opener to avoid a three game skid and fall behind the Dodgers too far. On paper they have the advantage...
