The Oakland A’s and the Minnesota Twins face off on Sunday in Oakland as they close out their series.
The Oakland A’s continued to slice through the competition on Saturday as they pounded the Twins. Derek Norris and Stephen Vogt each hit home runs and Josh Donaldson added three hits as the A’s scored nine runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija allowed seven hits and two runs while striking out five over 6.0 innings to go to 3-1 since being traded to Oakland. For Sunday’s game the Athletics start Jason Hammel who is coming off of his first win since being traded to Oakland. Since the trade Hammel has allowed 33 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 14 over 22.2 innings for a 1-4 record and a 7.15 ERA.

The Minnesota Twins misery continued on Saturday as they lost in Oakland in a non-competitive effort. Daniel Santana, Kennys Vargas, and Eduardo Escobar each had two hits as the Twins scored four runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Trevor May got rocked allowing three hits and four runs and walking seven over just two innings to take the loss and fall to 0-1 for year. For Sunday’s game Minnesota starts Phil Hughes who got a win in his last start to end a person three game winning streak. For the season Hughes has allowed 165 hits and 64 earned runs while striking out 127 over 143.2 innings for an 11-8 record and a 4.01 ERA.
Oakland is 5-1 in their last six games, 38-17 in their last 55 home games, and 1-4 in Hammel’s last five starts. Minnesota is 2-6 in their last eight road games, 1-5 following a loss, and 8-3 in Hughes’ last 11 starts as a road underdog. Minnesota is 7-19 in the last 26 meetings of these two.
