The Kansas City Royals and the Oakland A’s face off on Tuesday at Kauffman Stadium for game two of their series in Kansas City.
The Kansas City Royals edged out the A’s on Monday and combined with a Tigers loss I Pittsburgh KC moved into first place in the AL Central. Alcides Escobar had two hits and Omar Infante and Alex Gordon each had hits as the Royals scored three runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Yodano Ventura allowed two hits and two runs while striking out five over 6.0 innings to not get a decision as Kelvin Herrera earned the win and Greg Holland earned his 35th save. For Tuesday’s game the Royals start Jeremy Guthrie who has won his last three starts. For the season Guthrie has allowed 135 hits and 71 earned runs while striking out 94 over 147 innings for a 8-9 record and a 4.35 ERA.

The Oakland A’s battled to the last out but didn’t do enough to beat the Royals on Monday. Josh Donaldson, Brandon Moss, and John Jaso each had hits as the Royals scored two runs on three hits. Starting pitcher Sonny Gray allowed sox hits and three runs, two earned, while striking out two over 7.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 12-6 for the season. For Tuesday’s game the Athletics start Jon Lester who has won both of his starts since being traded to Oakland. Since the trade Lester has allowed 12 hits and three runs while striking out 11 over 15.2 innings for a 2-0 record and a 1.72 ERA.
Kansas City is 6-0 in their last six home games, 16-3 in their last 19 games, and 7-3 in Guthrie’s last 10 starts. Oakland is 5-3 in their last eight games, 39-17 as a road favorite, and 35-16 in game two of a series. Oakland is 7-4 in their last 11 meetings with Kansas City.
Oakland traded for Lester for games and spots just like this but the Royals are just too hot to go against for me.
