The Chicago Cubs pay a visit to Citi Field to open up a series with the New York Mets Friday.
The Chicago Cubs have made several changes to the rotation since the trade deadline yet they have still been competitive even though last place in the National League Central is going to be the final resting place. The Cubs had a chance to sweep the visiting Brewers but came up short in a 6-2 defeat on Thursday afternoon. Edwin Jackson struggled early with five runs plated on seven hits and a trio of BB. The bats produced five hits with PH Chris Valaika ripped a two run single but the offense struggled to make contact with 16 strikeouts. Left hander Travis Wood will represent the Cubs on the mound on Friday night versus the Mets. Wood hasn't been consistent and is 7-9 with a 4.86 ERA with a 1.53 WHIP in 24 starts where the Cubs are 13-11.

There are a few things the New York Mets can accomplish in 2014 and they are third in the National League East and a winning record. I don't think reaching .500 is impossible but my gut says it's improbable. The Mets took another step back with a 4-1 defeat to visiting Washington on Thursday night where both the arms and bats struggled. Dillon Gee gave up four runs on six hits including a pair of long balls through six innings of work which was far too much for an offense that mustered only three hits to overcome. Lucas Duda connected on a sacrifice fly to drive in Daniel Murphy with the lone run. Zack Wheeler hopes to continue his strong pitching when he faces the Cubs in the series opener. Wheeler has posted quality starts in eight consecutive outings and has gone 7-9 with a 3.53 ERA overall.
The Cubs and Wood have fared well in this match up versus a New York squad that is not formidable at the plate. Wheeler has an edge on the mound and needs to be here...
