The Line: St. Louis Cardinals -213 / San Diego Padres +197 --- Over/Under: 7.5 See the Latest Odds

The St. Louis Cardinals and San Diego Padres conclude their weekend series at Busch Stadium.

The San Diego Padres are rebuilding for next season as the pitching staff has been strong but the offense has ranked last in the league in runs scored, batting average, on base percentage and slugging for the bulk of the season.   The Padres also traded away players like Chris Denorfia and Chase Headley as younger pieces like Yangervis Solarte, Tommy Medica, and Yasmani Grandal will have bigger roles on the team moving forward.  The Padres will look to deliver a strong performance on the mound in Sunday’s finale as they turn to a potential future cornerstone of their starting rotation.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. San Diego Padres MLB Pick, Odds, Prediction 8/17/14

Odrisamer Despaigne will make the start for the Padres in Sunday’s series finale looking for redemption against the Cardinals.  The 27 year old Cuban rookie right-hander has enjoyed a successful debut season as he enters this game with a WHIP of 1.24, ERA of 2.72 and record of 3-3 across nine starts.  Unfortunately for Despaigne, his worst outing of the season came against the Cardinals on July 31st, allowing six runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings of work.   Despaigne has nonetheless proven the ability to be dominant when on his game, as evidenced in his most recent outing pitching seven innings of five hit shutout ball against the Rockies.

The St. Louis Cardinals would be in the playoffs as a Wild Card in the National League if the season ended today despite having an offense that’s tapered off dramatically with runners in scoring position from a season ago.  Nonetheless the Cards know how to take care of business on their home field and are also well managed with a strong presence of veteran leadership on the team.  The Cardinals should figure to get even stronger down the stretch run as foundational catcher Yadier Molina could return as early as mid-September after undergoing surgery on July 11th for a thumb injury sustained while making a slide head first.

Adam Wainwright will take the mound on Sunday in search of his 15th win of the season.  Wainwright has been a true staff ace this season, entering this matchup with a WHIP of just 1.02, ERA of 2.34 and record of 14-7.  The veteran right-hander has also had success against the Padres in his career as the current San Diego lineup is hitting just .221 lifetime against him over 122 at bats; Wainwright has yet to face the Padres this season.   Surprisingly Wainwright has worse numbers at home with a 3.66 ERA, but he’s also been razor sharp in day games with a 2.41 ERA across eight starts.

This game is probably a little closer than the odds suggest but I'm making the leap that the Cardinals are able to have success for a second time against Despaigne while Wainwright lives up to his career numbers against the Padres.
