The New York Mets make the long trip to the west coast where the Oakland Athletics are waiting.
The Mets still have dreams of overtaking the Miami Marlins for third in the National League East but they are playing .500 ball the last few weeks and that won't get the job done for a team that is still fighting to reach the breakeven point. The Mets took a step in the wrong direction in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs where the pen nd offense struggled. Starter Carlos Torres tossed five scoreless frames but Dana Eveland, Buddy Carlyle and Jenrry Mejia allowed all four runs. The bats never got going with four hits with Lucas Duda providing the offense with 22nd homer. The New York Mets kick off their west coast road swing with Dillon Gee on the mound. Gee has not looked in form since returning from the disabled list with just two quality starts in seven outings.

The Oakland Athletics have not been playing well and the result is second place in the American League West at one game behind the Angels. The A's offense has suddenly disappeared which has led to defeats seven of eight after Sunday's 4-3 loss at Atlanta on Sunday. Even Jon Lester couldn't save the team with all four runs allowed (three earned) on six hits including a pair of homers through six innings. The Athletics managed just six hits with Nate Freiman doing the damage with a homer, two RBI's and two runs while Coco Crisp doubled in the other. The Oakland Athletics send ace Scott Kazmir to the bump to begin to right a sinking ship versus the New York Mets. Kazmir is a big reason the A's are fighting for the division title with a 13-5 record and 2.78 ERA.
Oakland has been downright awful but have their best on the mound in Kazmir while the Mets have been struggling and have a struggling Gee going. This one has danger written all over it...
