The San Diego Padres look to get back on the winning track with a visit to Chase Field to open a series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The San Diego Padres were playing well but the past week has took some steam out of their drive to reach .500 with defeats in four of six. The Padres missed out on a chance to knock off Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers in a 2-1 defeat with a two run LAD 8th being the difference. Tyson Ross threw seven scoreless innings before giving up a two run homer and taking the loss. The Padres attack produced three hits and three walks with Rene Rivera driving in Abraham Almonte. Rookie Odrisamer Despaigne is looking to right a sinking ship when he takes the ball against the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday. Despaigne has faded from a great start with poor showings in three of his last four appearances where he has allowed 15 runs.
USA TODAY Sports
The Arizona Diamondbacks haven't had a great season and things have not gotten any better with the losses mounting. The offense has been silent in the past eleven contests where the Snakes have dropped nine following Thursday's 1-0 loss at Washington. Starter Wade Miley was outstanding with 6.2 shutout innings in a no decision effort. Oliver Perez took the loss with an unearned run scored in the 9th. The offense never got going with four hits and four bases on balls to their credit. Josh Collmenter toes the rubber versus the visiting San Diego Padres on Friday night. Collmenter has been in a bit of a funk with only one quality start in his last four appearances with 15 runs plated in 12 frames.
There is really very little to like about this match up with two struggling pitchers and offences. I suppose the better team angle would merit a play on San Diego but backing either team is risky...
