The Cincinnati Reds and the Atlanta Braves face off on Friday in Cincinnati in game two of their series.
The Cincinnati Reds are quickly falling out of post-season contention and getting whipped by the Braves on Thursday didn’t help their position. Todd Frazier, Brandon Phillips, and Skip Schumaker each had hits as the Reds failed to score on five hits. Starting pitcher David Holmberg allowed five hits and six runs while striking out two over 2.2 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-1 for the season. For Friday’s game the Reds start Mat Latos who has won his last two decisions but he has no decisions in his last two starts. For the season Latos has allowed 59 hits with 27 earned runs while striking out 54 over 78.1 innings for a 4-3 record and a 3.10 ERA.

The Atlanta Braves are on the outside looking in at the post season but they continued their strong play by winning on Thursday. Andrelton Simmons hit a home run and Jason Heyward, Justin Upton and Phillip Gosselin each had two hits as the Braves scored eight runs on eight hits. Starting pitcher Julio Teheran allowed four hits and struck out three over 6.0 shutout innings to get the win and raise his record to 12-9 for the season. For Friday’s game the Braves start Mike Minor who is coming off of a win in his last start. For the season Minor has allowed 139 hits and 64 earned runs while striking out 101 over 111.2 innings for a 5-8 record and a 5.16 ERA.
Cincinnati is 2-5 in their last seven games as a favorite, 0-6 in their last six games, and 27-9 in Latos’ last 36 starts. Atlanta is 6-1 in their last seven games, 3-8 in their last 11 games as an underdog, and 10-4 in Minor’s last 14 starts as an underdog. Atlanta has won five of their last six games against Cincinnati.
Minor hasn’t done much to give me any confidence he can get it done here so I will go with the struggling Reds.
