The Milwaukee Brewers look to avoid being swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the NL Central rivals conclude their weekend series on Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have now won three straight games following a seven game losing streak. In last night’s 10-2 win, the Pirates bats had a huge day once again as Pedro Alvarez made the move to first base and hit two home runs to drive in four runs, Russell Martin hit a three run home run, and Neil Walker had three hits and three RBI’s. Pittsburgh picked up another game in the NL Central race with the win where they now sit four games back.

Vance Worley will start for Pittsburgh on Sunday looking to bounce back from consecutive poor starts. The 26 year old right-hander Worley was roughed up by the Braves and Tigers in his last two outings, but has generally been effective on the season with a WHIP of 1.19 and ERA of 2.92 while posting a record of 5-2. Worley has not faced the Brewers this season but has been effective in six road starts with an ERA of 2.85.
The Milwaukee Brewers have historically owned the Pirates at Miller Park over the past few seasons, but thus far in this series they can’t seem to put it together. Wily Peralta had a rare off night last night for Milwaukee, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits while lasting just five innings. The offense managed 12 hits on the night but only managed to convert the output into two runs as Carlos Gomez, Jonathan Lucroy, Scooter Gennett and Lyle Overbay each had two hits.
The Brewers will look to dodge being swept as they turn to Mike Fiers who has won all three of his starts this season. The 29 year old right-hander Fiers has been dominant with a 0.86 ERA in August across starts against the Blue Jays, Cubs and Dodgers, racking up 25 strikeouts over 21 innings. For the season which includes bullpen work in June Fiers owns a WHIP of 0.71 and ERA of 1.29 while going 3-1.
The Pirates are rejuvenated with McCutchen back from the DL but I don’t like what I’ve seen out of Worley recently so I will back the home team to avoid the sweep at home.
