The Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals face off on Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park for game one of their series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates got some late inning heroics on Tuesday to get the win over the Cardinals. Ike Davis hit a pinch hit three run home run, Josh Harrison hit a home run, and Russell Martin had three hits as the Pirates scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole allowed three hits and two runs while striking out nine over 6.0 innings to not factor in the decision as Tony Watson blew the save and then got the win to go to 9-1 for the season and Mark Melancon earned his 23rd save. For Wednesday’s game the Pirates start Jeff Locke who has won his last three decisions. For the season Locke has allowed 95 hits and 40 earned runs while striking out 63 over 97.2 innings for a 5-3 record and a 3.69 ERA.

The St. Louis Cardinals are still in the hunt for the NL Central crown but they didn’t gain any ground on the leading Brewers on Tuesday as the lost in Pittsburgh. Kolten Wong, Matt Adams, and Matt Holliday each had hits as he Cardinals scored two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Lance Lynn allowed six hits and two runs while striking out three over 6.0 innings t not factor in the decision as Seth Maness took the loss to fall to 5-3 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Cardinals start Adam Wainwright who has lost two of his last three starts. For the season Wainwright has allowed 146 hits and 51 earned runs while striking out 145 over 182 innings for a 15-8 record and a 2.52 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 4-9 in their last 13 games, 2-7 as an underdog, and 9-4 in Locke’s last 13 starts. St. Louis is 5-2 in their last seven games as a favorite, 9-4 in their last 13 games, and 7-3 in Wainwright’s last 10 road starts. St. Louis is 5-2 in the last seven meetings of these two.
The Pirates had all of the momentum at the end of Tuesday and I look for that to carry over here and for Pittsburgh to get the win as the home dog.
