The Seattle Mariners and the Washington Nationals face off on Friday at Safeco Field for game one of their interleague series of post-season hopefuls.
The Seattle Mariners are battling for the final Wild Card pot as getting into contention in the AL West isn’t going to happen at this point of the season. The Mariners are 35-34 at home, 6-4 in their last 10 games, and they are coming off of a loss on Wednesday. As a team the Mariners are hitting .246 with Robinson Cano hitting .325, Kyle Seager hitting .275, and Dustin Ackley hitting .256. The Mariners pitching staff as an ERA of 2.99 with the starters at 3.30 and the bullpen at 2.37. For game one against the Nats the Mariners start Felix Hernandez who is coming off of one of his worst outings of the year. For the season Hernandez has allowed 135 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 2-4 over 191 innings for a 13-4 record and a 2.07 ERA.
USA TODAY Sports
The Washington Nationals are in control of the NL East but they know there work is far from over. The Nationals are 32-32 on the road, 6-4 in their last 10 games, and they have lost their last three games in a row. As a team the Nationals are hitting .252 with Denard Span hitting .300, Jayson Werth hitting .288, and Anthony Rendon hitting .276. As a team the Washington pitching staf has an ERA of 3.13 with the starters at 3.21 and the bullpen at 2.95. For game one at Seattle the Nationals start Jordan Zimmerman who has won his last three decisions. For the season Zimmerman has allowed 157 hits and 52 earned runs while striking out 140 over 159.2 innings for a 9-5 record and a 2.93 ERA.
Seattle is 9-3 their last 12 home games, 15-6 in their last 21 games, and 5-0 in Hernandez’s last five starts in game one of a series. Washington is 12-4 in their last 16 games, 19-7 following an off day, and 51-23 in Zimmerman’s last 74 starts. Washington has won their last nine meetings with Seattle.
The total is set at six and that just looks to be too low despite the big matchup on the mound. My stronger pick is on the winning side and I will post that in the Premium Area as well as on the App.
