The New York Mets host the Philadelphia Phillies for game two of three in their weekend series in NL East action at Citi Field.
The Philadelphia Phillies struggled once again on offense last night as they fell to the Mets by a score of 4-1. Starting pitcher David Buchanan was solid pitching six innings and allowing just one run but Jake Diekman allowed three runs in the bottom of the seventh after the Phillies had tied the game at one in the top half of the inning. Philadelphia managed just five hits in the loss as Chase Utley had two hits and Cody Asche delivered the only RBI. The loss moved the Phillies to 28-35 on the road for the season.

Jerome Williams will take the mound for the Phillies in Saturday’s game looking to continue a resurgent stretch since coming to the National League. In three starts in the NL, Williams has an ERA of 1.77 across 20.1 innings of work, most recently lasting eight innings and allowing just one run against the Cardinals. For the season Williams’ numbers don’t look as strong as he has a WHIP of 1.49 and ERA of 5.42 while posting a 4-5 record across time in both leagues.
The New York Mets are playing for pride at this point of the season, but the home town fans will always appreciate a win over the rival Phillies like they got last night. Jacob deGrom continued his impressive rookie campaign allowing just one run on four hits over seven innings and the offense capitalized on errors to accumulate four runs on four hits. Travis d'Arnaud had the team’s only RBI, Juan Lagares put pressure on the defense with his speed, and Eric Campbell stole home in the win.
The Mets will turn to the ageless Bartolo Colon for Saturday’s game. Colon has faced the Phillies three times this year and has been dominant with an ERA of 1.59 over 22.2 innings. For the season Colon has a WHIP of 1.15 and ERA of 3.82 while posting a record of 12-10. Colon has been at his best at Citi Field with an ERA of 3.04 across 11 home starts.
Colon has owned the Phillies this year but with the way Williams has pitched of late it’s not inconceivable that the underdog can best their rival in this spot at a price.
