The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks open up a four game NL West series on Monday afternoon at Petco Park.
The Arizona Diamondbacks won their weekend series over the Rockies with a 6-2 win in Sunday’s series finale. Rookie starter Chase Anderson was highly effective allowing just one run on five hits over six innings and the offense was alive with 11 total hits. Aaron Hill had three hits, two RBI’s and scored twice, Ender Inciarte had two hits and scored twice, and Nolan Reimold hit a pinch hit two run homer in his second game since joining the team from Toronto.

Trevor Cahill will make the start for the DBacks on Monday looking to bounce back from getting bombed by the Dodgers last time out allowing eight runs (six earned) on six hits while walking three over just 3.1 innings. Cahill has worked both as a starter and out of the bullpen and enters this game with a WHIP of 1.56 and ERA of 4.98 while posting a record of just 3-9. Cahill has done his best work on the road with an ERA of 3.43 across 39.1 total innings.
The San Diego Padres lost 7-1 to the Dodgers on Sunday, but they’ve nonetheless won their last two series at home entering Monday’s matchup. On Sunday, Padres starter Eric Stults was decent allowing two runs on five hits over six innings, but the bullpen allowed four runs and the offense failed to solve Hyun-Jin Ryu while managing just four total hits. Yangervis Solarte had two hits including a double, Yasmani Grandal had a hit and an RBI, and Rymer Liriano had a hit.
Tyson Ross will make the start for the Padres on Monday looking to cement his status as an ace for next season. Ross enters this game with a WHIP of 1.17 and ERA of 2.64 while going 12-12 across 28 starts with two complete games. The righty Ross has been stellar at home with an ERA of 1.90 over 14 starts. He has also been effective against the Diamondbacks with an ERA of 3.32 over three starts and 19 innings of work.
The Padres’ lack of offensive production makes them tough to back as a heavy favorite but after they’ve won two straight home series against playoff teams they are the pick in this spot.
