The St. Louis Cardinals host the Pittsburgh Pirates for game one of a three game series with playoff implications for both the NL Central and NL Wild Card races.
The Pittsburgh Pirates weren’t able to sweep the Reds over the weekend as they dropped Sunday’s finale 3-2 losing to Johnny Cueto. Francisco Liriano allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings to not factor in the decision and Jared Hughes gave up the deciding home run to take the loss. The Pirates took Cueto deep twice early as Josh Harrison launched the first pitch of the game into the bleachers and Jordy Mercer added another solo shot in the second inning, but Pittsburgh didn’t manage to score again in the game in a nine hit effort.

Gerrit Cole will take the mound for the series opener in just his third start since a lengthy stay on the DL throughout most of July and August. Cole enters this game with a WHIP of 1.27 and ERA of 3.65 while posting a 7-4 record across 16 starts. The 23 year old righty Cole faced the Cardinals in his latest start allowing two runs on three hits over six innings while not getting a decision in a Pirates win. Cole has an ERA of 2.25 across three starts this year against St. Louis, but he hasn’t been as sharp on the road this year with an ERA of 4.01 across seven starts.
The St. Louis Cardinals split their four game weekend series with the Cubs to pull even with the Brewers atop the NL Central. The Cardinals didn’t make things easy for themselves on Sunday spotting the Cubs with a five run lead, but they rallied twice to tie the game at six and eventually took the lead for good on a Matt Holliday infield hit in the eighth inning. The Cardinals pounded out 13 hits in the win as Matt Holliday had three hits including a home run and four RBI’s, Johnny Peralta had three hits and two RBI’s, Matt Carpenter had a hit, RBI, three walks and scored three times, and Kolten Wong had a solo home run.
Lance Lynn will make the start for the home side on Monday looking to continue what has been an impressive season. Lynn enters this game with a WHIP of 1.28 and ERA of 2.79 while posting a record of 14-8. The 27 year old righty Lynn hasn’t been at his best against the Pirates with an ERA of 3.86 across three starts and 18.2 innings, but he has been razor sharp at home with an ERA of 2.34 across 15 starts allowing just one home run.
The Cardinals are a strong home team with the better starting pitcher and the Pirates are ten games below .500 on the road. At this price the Cardinals are the logical choice.
