The Detroit Tigers look to close the gap in the Central with back to back wins over the Kansas City Royals.
The Kansas City Royals had a golden opportunity to pick up a game in the standing versus Detroit in the series opener but a lack of offense and some early Detroit offense had the Royals staring at a 9-5 defeat. Starter Jeremy Guthrie suffered through one of his worse outings with eight runs plated on ten hits over 2.2 frames to take the loss. The offense mustered eight hits with Lorenzo Cain smacking a solo homer while Norichika Aoki smacked a two run single. Left hander Jason Vargas gets the call to the mound to faceoff with the Detroit Tigers for the 4th time in 2014. Vargas hopes to build on the momentum of a 4-1 win over Texas with 6.2 scoreless innings.

The Detroit Tigers have stumbled in 2014 much more then in prior seasons but at the end of the day they have hung around and have their fate in their own hands with Kansas City in town. The Tigers have not been as fearsome with Justin Verlander on the mound but he was just enough Monday with four runs plated over seven innings to improve to 13-12 on the season. The offense was front page news with a 15 hit, three walk attack producing a pair of RBI's and two runs from Nick Castellanos while Torii Hunter scored twice. The Tigers turn to Max Scherzer on the hill who matches up with the Kansas City Royals for the third time. Scherzer has had some problems as of late with a 1-1 record with an ERA just north of five.
Scherzer has not been as strong as he was in 2013 so backing him sometimes means we are hoping for a return to last year's form. I don't have a lot of luck backing the Tigers to be honest and I wouldn't lay any kind of juice with them so take this with a grain of salt...
