The New York Mets and Miami Marlins begin their battle for third in the NL East on Monday night.

The Miami Marlins dreams of challenging in the division have come and gone and the goal is to finish third in the NL East. Those hopes received a boost with a four run 9th that lifted the Marlins past Philadelphia 5-4 on Sunday. Tom Koehler kept his team in the game with three runs plated (two earned) over six frames for a ND. Miami mustered nine hits with Enrique Hernandez hitting his first homer with Christian Yelich scoring the winner in the 9th on a wild pitch. Jarred Cosart draws the starting assignment for Monday's bout with the New York Mets. Cosart has thrown the ball well over his last three starts where he has gone 2-1 with a 1.74 ERA.

New York Mets vs. Miami Marlins Pick-Odds-Prediction - 9/15/14

The New York Mets have been pplaying their best baseball of the season over the past few weeks and although it's too late to make an impact in the division, third place is within their grasp. That goal took a step in the wrong direction with Sunday's 3-0 defeat at the hands of the visiting Nationals. In the process a very good effort on the mound from Jon Niese went for naught with a pair of runs allowed through seven inning ending up as a loss. The Mets totaled eight hits with Wilmer Flores going 2-4 with a triple. The Mets send Jacob deGom to the bump to oppose the Miami Marlins for the 4th time in 2014. DeGrom has been red hot over his last three outings where he has not given up a run.

Both teams want to finish third in the National League East even though it doesn't really impact things at this point. I'll back the hotter pitcher here...
