The Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates begin a three-game series Friday night at PNC Park.
The Milwaukee Brewers have lost three of their last five games and have really put themselves in a hole in hopes of making the playoffs. The issue for the Brewers lately has been a lack of offense, as they’ve scored three or less runs in eight of their last 12 games. The Brewers have lost 14 of their last 16 games when scoring three or less runs. Aramis Ramirez has hit in six of his last eight games and Ryan Braun has a four-game hitting streak. The Milwaukee Brewers have an ERA of 3.74, which is 18th in the majors. Yovani Gallardo takes the hill, and he’s 8-10 with a 3.59 ERA and has 131 strikeouts in 180.1 innings. Gallardo is 12-5 with a 2.67 ERA in 25 career games against the Pirates.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pittsburgh Pirates have won seven of their last eight games and are 12 games above a .500 record. The Pirates have been getting the job done at both ends of the field, but their pitching staff has allowed three or less runs in 10 of their last 14 games. Overall, the Pittsburgh Pirates have an ERA of 3.54, which is 11th in the majors, and they’ve won nine straight when allowing three or less runs. Offensively, Andrew McCutchen has gotten on base at least once in eight of his last 10 games and Jordy Mercer has hit in nine of his last 10 games. Starting is Jeff Locke, who is 7-5 with a 3.66 ERA and has 83 strikeouts in 120.1 innings. Locke is 2-2 with a 4.28 ERA in six career starts against the Brewers.
The Brewers are 1-5 in Gallardos last 6 starts vs. National League Central and 0-5 in Gallardos last 5 starts overall. The Pirates are 7-1 in Lockes last 8 home starts and 5-2 in Lockes last 7 starts during game 1 of a series. The Brewers are 18-6 in Gallardos last 24 starts vs. Pirates.
Although these two teams are moving in different directions, Gallardo has had the Pirates number his entire career. I'll give the Brewers a shot at the plus money.
