The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Brewers face off on Saturday for game two of their series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates looked to be on their way to a loss on Friday but late heroics turned it into a win. Starling Marte was the hero hitting a three run home run to take the lead and Andrew McCutchen and Travis Snider each had two hits as the Pirates scored four times on 11 hits in all. Starting pitcher Jeff Locke allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings but it was John Holdzkom who got the win and Mark Melancon who earned the save. For Saturday’s game the Pirates start Edinson Volquez who is 12-7 with a 3.27 ERA this season but he hasn’t taken a loss in quite some time. Volquez is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA over his last three starts and that is a solid indication of how he has pitched in recent months.
USA TODAY Sports
The Milwaukee Brewers collapse this season continued on Friday as they took a bad lossin Pittsburgh. Rickie Weeks hit a home run, Jonathan Lucroy had two hits, and Ryan Braun had a double and scored but the Brewers were unable to hold the lead. Starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo allowed five hits and struck out 11 over 7.0 innings but Jonathan Broxton was shelled allowing four runs and four hits while retiring just one batter taking the loss. For Saturday’s game the Brewers start Matt Garza who got a win last time out, his first since returning from the DL. Garza is 8-8 for the season with a 3.74 ERA amd 1-1 with a 5.54 ERA in his last three starts.
Pittsburgh is 5-0 in their last five games, 38-17 in their last 5 home games, and 6-1 in Volquez’s last seven starts as a favorite. Milwaukee is 4-10 against the NL Central, 1-9 as an underdog, and 0-4 in Garza’s last four road starts. Milwaukee is 5-2 in their last seven games in Pittsburgh.
These two teams are just opposites right now and the Pirates have all of the momentum and I have to give them the edge here.
