The San Francisco Giants kick off the final series of the year with a Thursday bout with the San Diego Padres.
The San Diego Padres won't finish the season with a winning record but it has been their best performance in several years. The Padres pitching was solid and they squeezed just enough out of their offense to upend Colorado 4-3 on Wednesday. Starter Joe Weiland allowed all three runs on three hits and a trio of BB over 5.1 frames while four relievers held the Rockies off the scoreboard. SD did their damage on six hits and four walks with Tommy Medica slamming a three run homer in the first. Andrew Cashner looks for his 4th consecutive victory when he opposes the San Francisco Giants for the second time. Cashner has logged a 1.50 ERA with a 0.75 WHIP in this stretch.

The San Francisco Giants are staring at the Wild Card which really isn't a terrible place to be after a dreadful 2013. An 9-1 loss at Los Angeles leaves the Giants fighting with Pittsburgh for which Wild Card it will be. Tim Hudson absorbed the loss with three runs scored through 5.1 innings with Javier Lopez and Erik Cordier allowing five more. San Francisco touched Clayton Kershaw for an early run and had runners on against him but let him off the hook. Pablo Sandoval, Andrew Susac and Gregor Blanco each logged a pair of hits but the big hit with runners on base never materialized with Hunter Pence driving in the lone run. Yusmeiro Petit takes the ball in the first game of the series versus the visiting San Diego Padres. Petit is coming in off of a 3-2 loss to the Padres with all three runs plated over 5.1 innings.
The Giants have something to play for and I think they win but I'm not touching that juice with a few days left in the season...
