The Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees face off on Saturday as their rivalry won’t produce a post season team this season.
The Boston Red Sox packed it in a long time ago this season and have gone from first to worst in the AL and we saw why again on Friday. Rusney Castillo hit a home run and Yoenis Cespedes and Allen Craig each had hits as the Red Sox scored two runs on six hits. Starting pitcher Steven Wright allowed four hits and two runs while striking out four over 5.0 innings to take the loss. For Saturday’s game the Red Sox start Joe Kelly who is 3-2 with a 4.00 ERA for the season and 2-1 with a 4.19 ERA in his last three starts.

The New York Yankees play out their season, Derek Jeter’s final one, as they beat the Red Sox on Friday. Derek Jeter didn’t play on Friday as Francisco Cervelli had two hits and Chris Young and J.R. Murphy each had hits as the Yankees scored three runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Chris Capuano allowed four hits and a run over 6.2 innings to get the win and David Robertson earned his 39th save. For Saturday’s game the Yankees start Masahiro Tanaka who missed two and a half months of the season and he is making his second start since returning.
Boston is 7-17 in game two of a series, 7-10 in their last 27 home games, and 5-2 in Kelly’s last seven starts as an underdog. New York is 3-7 in their last 10 road games, 5-2 as a favorite, and 12-4 in Tanaka’s last 16 starts as a favorite. New York is 5-1 in the last six meetings of these two.
Tanaka is one of the best in the business and I have to believe he is way too much here.
