The Kansas City Royals are coming off their improbable wild card comeback against the Oakland Athletics, a game in which they stole seven bases and batted a solid .341. It’s going to be interesting to see how the Royals handle this game given the fact they’ve had a lack of rest due to playing Tuesday and having to travel. It’s quite clear the Royals are going to be aggressive this postseason and put a ton of pressure on pitchers and catchers. Of course, the Kansas City Royals were first in the league this season with 153 stolen bases and last in home runs, which means there’s going to be a ton of small ball going on in this series from the underdogs. Taking the mound for the Royals will be Jason Vargas, who is 11-10 with a 3.71 ERA and has 128 strikeouts in 187 innings. This will be Vargas’ first career game in the postseason.
The Los Angeles Angels have to be happy to play some meaningful baseball, as they’ve lost seven of their last 10 games preparing for this moment. The Angels are the complete opposite of the Royals, relying on the long ball and extra base hits to put runs on the board. Mike Trout and Albert Pujolshave more than 100 RBIs and the Angels have six different players with at least 10 homers. This will be the first career playoff game for Trout, but other Los Angeles players such as Pujols and David Freese already have world series hardware to provide the team with much needed experience. The Angels look to get their offense back on track, as they’ve scored three or less runs in eight of their last 12 games. Taking the mound will be Jered Weaver, who is 18-9 with a 3.59 ERA and has 169 strikeouts in 213.1 innings. In the postseason, Weaver is 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA and has 22 strikeouts in 20.2 innings.
The Royals are 4-0 in their last 4 games as an underdog, 0-4 in Vargas' last 4 starts and 7-3 in Vargas' last 10 starts during game 1 of a series. The Angels are 4-1 in their last 5 playoff home games, 41-17 in their last 58 home games and 71-33 in Weavers last 104 starts overall. The Angels are 6-0 in Weavers last 6 starts vs. Royals, while the Royals are 3-7 in the last 10 meetings.
I'm not buying that juice this early in the series with a Royals team that is red hot and starting to gain insane confidence. The Angels didn't end the regular season on a positive note and simply haven't been scoring the way we're used to seeing. Give me the Royals and the plus money simply on value.
