The Baltimore Orioles and the Detroit Tigers face off on Thursday at Camden Yards for game one of their ALDS.
The Baltimore Orioles finished the season tied for the second best overall record in baseball this season and after a tight first half of the season in the AL East they ran away with the division title finishing 12 games ahead of the second place Yankees. The Orioles were 50-31 at home this season but lost five of their six games against the Tigers though they haven’t played one another since May. As a team the Orioles are hitting .256 with Adam Jones hitting .281, Nick Markakis hitting .276, and Nelson Cruz hitting .271 with 40 home runs. The Orioles pitching staff has an ERA of 3.44 with the starters at 3.61 and the bullpen at 3.10. For game one against the Tigers the Orioles start Chris Tillman who was 16-6 with a 3.34 ERA for the season but before his last start, which he lost, he hadn’t taken a loss in 13 starts.

The Detroit Tigers seem to be regulars in the post season but they don’t have a lot of hardware to show for it. The Tigers staggered into the end of the season not clinching the NL Central until the final day of the season. As a team the Tigers are the best hitting team in baseball at .277 with Victor Martinez hitting .335, Miguel Cabrera hitting .313, and Torii Hunter hitting .286. The Tiger pitching staf has an ERA of 4.01 with the starters at 3.89 and the bullpen at 4.29. For game one against the O’s the Tigers start Max Scherzer who was 18-5 with a 3.15 ERA and he won five of his last six decisions but has hardly been unbeatable like he was a season ago.
Baltimore is 5-2 as a home underdog, 37-16 in their last 53 home games, 21-10 in their last 31 games, and 4-0 in Tillman’s last four starts as a home underdog. Detroit is 5-1 in game one of a series, 7-3 as a road favorite, 9-4 on the road against a right-handed starter, and 5-1 in Scherzer’s last six road starts. Detroit has won four of their last five games in Baltimore.
Both of these teams can hit the ball and we have two pitchers who can bring it so we have a great matchup but I expect the hitters to win this battle and my free pick is going to be on the over. I also have a play on the winning side that I will post in the Premium Area as well as the App.
