The Kansas City Royals and Los Angeles Angels play game 2 of the ALDS Friday night.
Despite the travel and playing on short rest, the Kansas City Royals found a way to win game 1 in 11 innings, 3-2. The Royals pitching staff has allowed three or less runs in eight of their last 13 games overall and held Mike Trout and Albert Pujols to zero hits in eight at bats. The Royals have won six straight when allowing three or less runs and showed in the game 1 victory why they have arguably the best bullpen in the playoffs. Offensively, Alcides Escobar has hit safely in 11 straight games and Mike Moustakas hit his first home run since August 25th in Thursday’s victory. Taking the mound Friday for Kansas City is Yordano Ventura, who is 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA and has 159 strikeouts in 183 innings. Ventura allowed two runs in 0.1 innings in the wild card match against the Oakland Athletics, which was his first career postseason action.

The Los Angeles Angels continue their scoring drought, as they’ve been held to three or less runs in seven of their last 10 games. The Angels have lost 11 of their last 12 games when scoring three or less runs, including now four in a row. Albert Pujols is hitless in nine of his last 10 games and Mike Trout has hit safely in five of his last 10 games. Of course, the Angels are the best offensive team in all of baseball but these recent scoring issues have to be concerning if you’re a Los Angeles fan. Pitching wise, the Los Angeles Angels have allowed four or more runs in six of their last 10 games. Taking the mound for the Angels will be Matt Shoemaker, who is 16-4 with a 3.04 ERA and has 124 strikeouts in 136 innings. This will be Shoemaker’s first time pitching in the postseason in his career.
The Royals are 4-0 in Venturas last 4 road starts, 6-1 in Venturas last 7 starts overall and 2-5 in their last 7 during game 2 of a series. The Angels are 4-1 in Shoemakers last 5 home starts, 17-4 in Shoemakers last 21 starts overall and 11-4 in their last 15 during game 2 of a series. The Royals are 4-7 in the last 11 meetings.
I really like what I'm seeing from the Royals right now, as they have this don't quit attitude. And Matt Shoemaker was crushed by the Royals back in June, as he allowed eight earned runs in four innings. Maybe I'm trying my luck here, but I'm taking the Kansas City Royals again in another underdog role.
