The San Francisco Giants battle the St Louis Cardinals in game number five of the NLDS on Thursday with a win sending them to the World Series.
The St Louis Cardinals postseason rests with their game five performance after a 6-4 loss at San Francisco in game four of the NLCS has them looking a a 3-1 series hole. It looked like this was going to be the Cardinals night as they raced to a 4-1 lead heading in to the bottom half of the third inning when things started to sour. In a nutshell the pitching couldn't hold a lead and the offense wasn't able to keep scoring. Starter Shelby Miller gave up three runs on six hits and a pair of free passes before getting the hook after 3.2 frames. Marco Gonzalez absorbed the loss with three runs plated in the 6th and the bats couldn't come back. The Cards pounded out eleven hits and walked four times with Kolten Wang going deep and scoring twice while Matt Adams and AJ Pierzynski knocking in runs. The Cardinals send ace Adam Wainwright out to face the San Francisco Giants for the second time in the NLCS. Wainwright struggled in that outing with three runs scored (two earned) on six hits and three walks over 4.2 innings pitched in a 3-0 defeat.

I don't have a crystal ball that will tell me what the near future holds for the San Francisco Giants but I can honestly say I went from believing this was the best team in the game early in the year to thinking they weren't even going to make the postseason. However they rebounded, snagged a Wild Card and are on the brink of the World Series which is nothing short of impressive. In game four's victory the Giants bucked the odds as they rallied from a three run hole and let the bullpen handle the rest. Ryan Vogelsong didn't fare well with all four runs plated on seven hits and two bases on balls before Yusmeiro Petit tossing three scoreless frames for his second outstanding performance of the postseason. Five more relievers sealed the deal an eleven hit, six walk attack provided enough scoring. Buster Posey was the big bat with two hits and three RBI's with Gregor Blanco scoring twice. Left hander Madison Bumgarner opposes the St Louis Cardinals in a rematch of game one of the NLCS. Bumgarner was a 3-0 winner in the opener with 7.2 scoreless innings of work with four hits and one BB allowed while striking out seven.
The Cardinals are 10-2 in their last 12 versus a left hander and 4-0 in Wainwright's last four starts with four days rest while going 5-2 in his last seven starts against the Giants. San Francisco is 4-0 in their last four NLCS home games and 4-1 in Bumgarner's last five starts on four days rest but just 2-5 in his last seven starts versus St Louis.
The trends seem to favor Wainwright and the Cardinals but from what I have seen Wainwright seems to be a tad off his game, be it fatigue, injury or something else. I don't think trends are the way to bet this game because my eyes say take San Francisco and get ready for the World Series...
