The St Louis Cardinals begin the hunt for another NL Central crown when they visit the Chicago Cubs to open 2015 on Sunday.
It’s another season which for St Louis Cardinals fans means the anticipation of another National League Central title and World Series berth which almost seems like a foregone conclusion. That looks like a good bet as the lineup and pitching staff has plenty of firepower to win in any manner of ways. Matt Carpenter, Matt Holliday, Jason Heyward and Matt Adams give the Cards plenty of punch while Adam Wainwright, veteran John Lackey and improving Lance Lynn are the nucleus of a strong rotation. The lone weakness is the Redbirds don’t go deep a lot but the addition of Heyward will help in that area. Perennial Cy Young contender Adam Wainwright gets the ball Sunday after going 20-9 with a 2.38 ERA in 2014.

The Chicago Cubs and winning baseball haven’t been mentioned in the same sentence in a long time. The Cubs haven’t been a winning team in years but they were busy in the offseason with the hiring of Joe Maddon as manager with Miguel Montero and Dexter Fowler joining the lineup that already had potential. Throw in that several players can play more then one position which gives one of the best mangers in the game plenty of alternatives. The signing of Jon Lester automatically gives the Cubbies a legitimate number one while Jake Arrieta seemed to have rediscovered himself and Kyle Hendricks has shown plenty of potential. Lefty Jon Lester gets the opening day start after going 16-11 with a 2.46 ERA split between Boston and Oakland.
The Cardinals are 20-8 in their last 28 games as a favorite and 20-7 in Wainwrights last 27 Sunday. starts while the under is 5-2-1 in Wainwrights last 8 Sunday. starts. The Over is 7-2 in the Cubs last 9 games as a home underdog. Head to head St. Louis are 7-1 in Wainwrights last 8 starts vs. Chicago while the over is 13-5-1 in the last 19 meetings.
The Cubs have been an afterthought in the NL Central for years but they seem to have a decent shot at winning this one at nice odds with some new faces and pumped up crowd…
