The Oakland Athletics butt heads with the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium in Friday night action.
There is nothing more important to Oakland right now then to win a few series and separate themselves from .500. The Athletics had to settle for taking two of three after their chance at sweeping Houston on the road went by the wayside in Wednesday’s 6-1 defeat. Lefty Drew Pomeranz struggled early with four runs pated on six hits and a walk over five to fall to 0-1 on the season. Evan Scribner and RJ Alvarez followed with homeruns allowed to put the game out of reach for an offense that mustered eight hits and struck out 13 times. Marcus Sieman drove in Billy Butler for the lone run while Ike Davis went 2-4. The Athletics begin a big weekend set with Sonny Gray on the hill hoping he can continue his great start. Gray did not receive a decision in a 5-4 loss to Seattle despite giving up only two runs (one earned) on six hits over 7.1 innings.

After jumping to a 7-0 start to the season the defending American League Central champions have now dropped two in a row. The Royals fell to the Twins by an 8-5 count Thursday afternoon as both their arms and bats struggled early in this one. Starter Jason Vargas was handed a 2-0 lead in the first but had nothing going with five runs surrendered (four earned) on ten hits through three frames. Chris Young and Ryan Madson allowed three more which negated a two run rally in the 9th. The Royals did their damage ten hits and four BB with Lorenzo Cain swinging the hot bat with a homer, three RBI’s and three runs with Mike Moustakas going 2-5 with a pair of runs. Right hander Jeremy Guthrie gets the ball against the big hitting Athletics in game one of their series. Guthrie is coming off of a 6-4 win at the Angels where he gave four runs on six hits and a BB in seven frames.
The under is 9-3-1 in Oakland’s last 13 road games while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 overall and 6-2 in their last 8 on grass. Kansas City are 10-2 in their last 12 home games and 59-28 in their last 87 overall while going 59-28 in their last 87 on grass. Head to head the under is 12-5-1 in their last 18 meetings. The Royals have lost back to back games and facing Sonny Gray doesn’t look like the best situation…
