The San Diego Padres conclude their series with the Chicago Cubs with an afternoon bout at Wrigley Field on Sunday.
The San Diego Padres showed us Saturday why they are still a ways away from the postseason. They blew a 2-0 lead in the first and squandered a four run 9th inning rally in an eleven inning 7-6 defeat to the Cubs. Starter Tyson Ross gave up three runs over five frames with Brandon Mauer and Chris Rearick gave up three runs with the loss going to Craig Kimbrel who allowed the winner in 1/3 of an inning in the 11th. The Padres smacked ten hits and walked once with Matt Kemp going deep with a pair of RBI’s and two runs scored while Yonder Alonzo went 2-5 with two more runs. Andrew Cashner gets the ball in Sunday’s series finale at Wrigley Field on Sunday. Cashner comes off an 8-4 loss to the Diamondbacks where he gave up four unearned runs on seven hits while striking out nine over six frames.

The Chicago Cubs do look better then in season’s past but they proved they are not where they need to be despite squeezing out a 7-6 win versus visiting San Diego on Saturday. The Cubs received a strong effort on the mound from Kyle Hendricks who gave up a pair of runs on three hits while striking out nine through six frames before Phil Coke and Hector Rondon gave up two runs each in the 9th to blow a four run lead. The Cubbies offense was impressive with a 12 hit, eight walk attack that saw Miguel Montero slug to homers and drive in three. Starlin Castro was 3-6 with two RBI’s and a run while Anthony Rizzo scored twice. Left hander Jon Lester makes his third start of 2015 when he faces San Diego. Lester has been a non factor thus far with nine runs given up on 18 hits and a pair of BB in a combined 10.1 innings pitched.
The over is 10-1 in the Padres last 11 Sunday games and San Diego are 19-40 in their last 59 road games. The over is 7-1 in the Cubs last 8 versus the National League West while the under is 6-3 in the Cubs last 9 home games. I see no advantage in backing either squad except San Diego has hit lefties well and are at plus money…
