The St Louis Cardinals battle NL Central foe the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in the series rubber match.

The St Louis Cardinals have hit and pitched their way to the best record in the game as they threaten to pull away from the National League Central. The Pirates dealt the red hot Cardinals a rare setback in a 7-5 defeat on Saturday. Starter Carlos Martinez gave up all seven runs on seven hits and four bases on balls over 5.1 frames to fall to 3-1. The Redbirds had opportunities on their ten hit, four walk attack with Yadier Molina ripping a two run double during a five run 4th. . Matt Holliday posted three hits with Jhonny Peralta and Jason Heyward both going 2-4 with RBI’s and runs but the rest of the lineup did not produce. Tyler Lyons gets the ball in the final game of their series at Pittsburgh. Lyons did not fare well in his first outing against the Cubs with four runs plated (three earned) on six hits and two BB in 4.1 frames.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals - 5/10/15 MLB Pick, Odds, and Prediction

The Pittsburgh Pirates are just trying to keep their heads above water while keeping the Cardinals within reach and that’s been tough to accomplish with the way the Redbirds are performing. The Pirates are hoping their come from behind victory was the first of many although they need much better efforts on the mound. Starter Vance Worley allowed all five runs on nine hits and a trio of free passes through five innings for a ND. Fortunately the pen held strong with four relievers allowing a hit over four frames. The Buccos made the most of seven hits and four walks with Jordy Mercer cracking a three run double with Neil Walker going deep and Jung-ho Kang scoring twice. Left hander Jeff Locke toes the rubber against visiting St Louis in Sunday’s final game of the series. Locke has struggled over his last three with a combined 13 runs allowed on 22 hits and eight BB over 15.2 innings.

St Louis are 13-3 in their last 16 Sunday games and  are 45-21 in their last 66 overall while going  45-21 in their last 66 games on grass. Pittsburgh are 6-2 in their last 8 Sunday games and  are 10-2 in Locke’s last 12 home starts while the over is 18-6-4 in Locke’s last 28 starts overall. Neither starter makes me overly confident so I wouldn’t back a side and feel good about it. Perhaps the over?
