The Pittsburgh Pirates visit Citizen’s Bank Park to open a series with the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are desperate to go off on a hot streak and give St Louis a run for their money in the National League Central. The Pirates might be poised to go on a run after a 4-3 victory versus visiting St Louis gave the Buccos back to back wins. Starter Jeff Locke did not get a decision but he did control the scoreboard with all three runs scored on five hits and two walks over 6.2 frames. The offense produced nine hits and a trio of bases on balls with Jung-ho Kang going 2-4 with a homer and two RBI’s while Starling Marte and Sean Rodriguez recorded two hits each. The Pirates kick off their series at Philadelphia with Gerrit Cole on the bump Monday. Cole looks to bounce back from a 3-0 loss to Cincinnati where he allowed all three runs on eight hits and two BB in five frames.

The Philadelphia Phillies probably have one goal and that is to avoid the National League East basement. If that goal is to be realized the Phillies need their scoring and pitching to be on the same page more often then not. That didn’t happen in a 7-4 loss to the visiting New York Mets on Sunday afternoon. Starter Chad Billingsley dropped to 0-2 with five runs plated on eight hits and a walk through five innings with Jeanmar Gomez allowing two more runs. The Phillies totaled nine hits and walked once with Billingsley connecting on a solo jack while Grady Sizemore went 2-4 with an RBI and a run. Veteran Jerome Williams gets the starting nod against visiting Pittsburgh Monday night. Williams is coming off of a 7-5 loss at Atlanta where he gave up six runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
The under is 6-1-2 in Pittsburgh’s last 9 road games and the over is 5-1-2 in their last 8 games as a favorite while the Pirates are 2-6 in their last 8 overall. Philadelphia are 3-8 in their last 11 games as an underdog and are 3-8 in their last 11 overall while going 3-8 in their last 11 games on grass. The over is 17-8-1 in the last 26 meetings. I see huge juice on Pittsburgh who has the advantages but beware Williams who does throw the occasional gem…
