The surging Philadelphia Phillies visit the red hot Washington Nationals on Friday night.
The Philadelphia Phillies are playing their best baseball of the season and that has gotten them out of the National League East basement. The Phillies had won seven of eight heading in to the series finale’ at Coors Field but struggled in most areas in a 7-3 defeat. Starter Jerome Williams was charged with five runs on eight hits and three BB over five innings to fall to 3-4. The Phils had opportunities at the plate on their seven hit, four walk attack that saw Ryan Howard crack his 9th homer while Darin Ruf was 2-3 with two runs knocked in. The Phillies send Sean O’Sullivan to the hill in the series opener against Washington. O’Sullivan is coming off his first win in two years in a 6-0 victory against Arizona where he tossed a five hit shutout over six frames.

The Phillies are hot but the Washington Nationals have been playing well for weeks and their reward is first place in the National League East. The Nationals offense has been making a lot of noise lately but it was the pitching that got the job done in Wednesday’s 3-2 win over the Yankees. Starter Jordan Zimmermann allowed both runs on five hits and a walk with six K’s through six innings to improve to 4-2. The bats were held to five hits and five walks with Ian Desmond and Tyler Moore smacking solo homers while Denard Span rapped an RBI single. Max Scherzer looks for his 4th straight win when he opposes Philadelphia for the third time in 2015. Scherzer is coming off of a 4-1 victory at San Diego where he threw a four hit shutout over seven innings.
Philadelphia are 7-1 in their last 8 overall and are 7-1 in their last 8 games on grass while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 overall. Washington are 17-4 in their last 21 overall and are 17-4 in their last 21 games on grass while the over is 25-10-1 in their last 36 overall. I know Scherzer is one of the best in the business but the line is too big for me to play. I’ll go RL and hope the Phils win…
