The New York Mets look to salvage the series finale’ at the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon.
The New York Mets need to get back to the winning ways that had them sitting atop the National League East. Getting back on the winning track will have to wait another day following an 8-2 loss at Pittsburgh for their 4th loss in five contests. Ace Matt Harvey was hit hard with seven runs plated on six hits and a pair of free passes including a pair of bombs over four frames. The Mets couldn’t keep pace on seven hits that saw Daniel Murphy go 3-4 with an RBI while Ruben Tejada smacking his first long ball. Lefty Jon Niese takes the hill on Sunday against the Pirates for the first time this season. The Pittsburgh Pirates are in desperate need of a hot streak and might have one in the making after back to back wins versus the Mets. The Pirates will be going for the sweep after a dominant Saturday where both the arms and bats were on the same page. Starter AJ Burnett continued his strong work on the mound with one run given up on five hits while striking out ten through seven innings to up his record to 4-1. The offense didn’t waste the effort with an eight hit, two walkattack doing plenty of damage. Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez both homered and drove in two while Josh Harrison knocked in a pair. Left hander Francisco Liriano is scheduled to be on the mound to face the Mets for the second time in his career. Liriano was pounded 8-5 by Minnesota last time out with seven runs plated over just two innings.
The Mets are 9-3 in their last 12 Sunday games and the over is 6-2 in their last 8 Sunday games while the under is 13-5-2 in New York’s last 20 overall. Pittsburgh are 2-6 in their last 8 overall and are 2-6 in their last 8 games on grass while the under is 14-6-2 in Liriano’s last 22 on grass. I think the Pirates are the play here based on how the Mets have been playing…
