The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Miami Marlins face off on Tuesday at PNC Park for game two of their series.
The Pittsburgh Pirates got out to an early lead on Monday and made it work for them beating the Marlins in a low scoring game. Pedro Alvarez and Francisco Cervelli each hit home runs and Starling Marte and Neil Walker added two hits each as the Pirates scored four runs on 10 hits. Starting pitcher Charlie Morton allowed eight hits and two runs while striking out three over 7.0 innings to get the win and Mark Melancon earned his 11th save. For Tuesday’s game the Pirates start Jeff Locke who has allowed 51 hits and 27 runs while striking out 36 over 46 innings for a 2-2 record and a 5.28 ERA.

The Miami Marlins had chances on Monday but they just didn’t convert on enough of them as they lost to the Pirates. Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run and Martin Prado and Dee Gordon each had hits as the Marlins scored two runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher David Phelps allowed eight hits and four runs while striking out four over 6.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 2-2 for the season. For Tuesday’s game the Marlins start Jose Urena who makes his first start of the year after allowing four hits and three runs in 3.0 innings of work in relief this season.
Pittsburgh is 11-3 against the NL East, 47-20 against a team with a losing record, and 11-3 in Locke’s last 14 home starts. Miami is 5-1 against a left-handed starter, 1-4 in game two of a series, and 3-13 against a team with a losing record. Miami is 2-8 in their last 10 games at Pittsburgh.
Locke hasn’t looked great this year and he is at the very least vulnerable so at the big price I will take a shot here with the Marlins as I don’t love this game.
