The Washington Nationals and the Chicago Cubs face off on Saturday at nationals Park for game one of their MLB series.
The Washington Nationals dropped their series opener to the Cubs on Thursday but bounced back with a win on Friday. Danny Espinosa hit a home run while Ian Desmond and Wilson Ramos each added hits as the Nationals scored seven runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Tanner Roark allowed six hits and four runs while striking out six over 5.2 innings to get the win and raise his record to 2-2 and Drew Storen earned his 18th save. For Saturday’s game the Nationals give Joe Ross his first Major League start but he has been impressive in AA striking out 54 in 51 innings with a 2.81 ERA.

The Chicago Cubs fell behind early on Friday and never caught up as they lost to the Nationals. Anthony Rizzo hit two home runs, Miguel Montero hit a home run, and Kris Bryant had a hot as the Cubs scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada allowed nine hits and five runs while striking out one lasting just 3.2 innings to take the loss. For Saturday’s game the Cubs start Jason Hammel who has allowed 53 hits and 21 earned runs while striking out 69 over 67 innings for a 4-2 record and a 2.82 ERA.
Washington is 8-2 in game three of a series, 10-4 in their last 14 home games, and 2-6 in their last eight games. Chicago is 7-4 against a team with a winning record, 1-4 in game three of a series, and 4-0 in Hamels last four starts against a team with a winning record.
Ross appears to have all of the right stuff and I expect him to shut down the Cubs here and win his debut.
