West meets West when the San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics meet at O.co Coliseum Wednesday night.
The San Diego Padres had hoped to be battling for first in the National League West at this point in the season but that hasn’t been the case. After Tuesday’s loss at Oakland the Padres have dropped six of eight as the pitching struggled. Andrew Cashner did not receive a decision with five runs given upon five hits and three bases on balls over five frames with Craig Kimbrel giving up a run in the 9th to take the loss. The bats totaled nine hits with Matt Kemp and Austin Hedges going deep while Melvin Upton Jr scoring twice. Odrisamer Despaigne is slated to oppose the Oakland Athletics for the first time on Wednesday. Despaigne suffered a 4-3 defeat to the Dodgers with two runs scored (one earned) on six hits over 6.1 innings.

The Oakland Athletics are still trying to dig themselves out of an early season hole and could be on their way after the win on Tuesday was their third straight. Starter Scott Kazmir gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits with Drew Pomeranz and Evan Scribner allowing a run each. The offense came to the rescue with eight hits and six walks that produced a two run bomb off the bat of Ben Zobrist. Billy Burns knocked in two more and scored while Eric Sogard singled in the winner in the 9th.Jesse Chavez is looking for his third victory when he faces San Diego for the first time. Chavez is coming off of a 5-4 loss at the Angels where he allowed three runs on seven hits in seven frames.
The over is 14-4-1 in San Diego’s last 19 on grass and is 14-4-1 in their last 19 overall while going 6-2 in the Padres last 8 road games. The over is 13-4-5 in Oakland’s last 22 interleague games while the Athletics are 5-14 in their last 19 Wednesday games with the over going 19-8 in their last 27 home games. The over is 7-2 in the last 9 meetings and San Diego are 2-6 in the last 8 meetings. This could go either way and I favor Oakland but won’t pay the juice and will look elsewhere…
