The Tampa Bay Rays kick off a series with the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field Friday night.
The Tampa Bay Rays have taken over the top spot in the American League East but with Baltimore, Toronto and the Yankees right on their tail they can’t afford a losing streak. The winning continued for another day as the Rays defeat Washington 5-3 for their 6th in seven contests. Starter Chris Archer wasn’t at his best with three runs plated on eight hits and two BB over five innings but the bullpen came to the rescue with four reliever tossing shutout ball. TB totaled 12 hits with Joey Butler going deep with Steven Souza scoring twice. Nathan Karns will be on the mound for his first career start against the Indians. Karns rebounded from a pair of poor outings to defeat the White Sox 2-1 with the lone run allowed on seven hits with eight K’s in six frames.

The Cleveland Indians are in one of the more competitive divisions in baseball and need to begin winning series or risk becoming an afterthought. The Indians defeated the visiting Chicago Cubs 4-3 Thursday after a lengthy rain delay. Starter Danny Salazar gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits through 4.2 innings before five relievers finished this one off. The Tribe totaled eight hits and walked three times with Michael Brantley, Yan Gomes and Giovanny Urshela driving in runs. The Indians turn to right hander Carlos Carrasco for the series opener versus Tampa Bay. Carrasco comes off of a 5-4 win at Detroit where he was charged with three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
The under is 19-6-1 in Tampa Bay’s last 26 road games while the Rays are 6-2 in their last 8 Friday games with the under going 19-7 in their last 26 games as an underdog. The over is 8-2 in Carrasco’s last 10 starts on grass and is 8-2 in Carrasco’s last 10 starts overall while going 6-2 in Carrasco’s last 8 Friday starts. The Rays are 10-24 in the last 34 meetings in Cleveland. I’m not completely confident in Karns so use caution…
