The surging Washington Nationals battle the rival Philadelphia Phillies in NL East action Friday night.
The Washington Nationals were the experts choice to capture the National League East and might be finally living up to those expectations. The Nationals stayed on a roll with their 6th straight victory in a 7-0 decision versus visiting Atlanta. Doug Fister came off the disabled list and looked in midseason form with a four hit shutout over seven innings of work. The Nats racked up 12 hits and walked twice with Ian Desmond going 2-4 with a homer and two RBI’s and two runs while Wilson Ramos scored twice. Yunel Escobar and Michael Taylor each knocked in a run and scored as every starter recorded at least one hit. The Nationals turn to Max Scherzer for game one of the series at Citizens Bank Park. Scherzer is coming off of a no hitter in a 6-0 win versus Pittsburgh after beating Milwaukee 4-0 with a complete game one hitter.

The Philadelphia Phillies looked dead in the water but showed plenty of positive signs this past week. The Phillies had won three straight with 31 runs scored before suffering a 10-2 loss to the Yankees on Wednesday. A three game sweep of the Bronx Bombers was not in the cards with ace Cole Hamels giving up five runs on eight hits through five frames before Justin De Fratus was charged with four more runs in two innings. The offense fell short on six hits and a trio of walks with Domonic Brown scoring and driving in a run while Cody Asche singled in Ryan Howard who doubled twice. Aaron Harang looks to right the ship from some recent struggles when he opposes the Nationals for the third time in 2015. Harang has allowed 20 runs on 25 hits over four starts.
Washington are 7-2 in Scherzer’s last 9 starts and are 7-2 in Scherzers’ last 9 starts on grass. The over is 10-1 in Philadelphia’s last 11 home games and theunder is 7-2 in their last 9 Friday games while the Phillies are 7-22 in their last 29 overall. The Nationals are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings. I’m just going with the hot pitcher on the hot team…
