The San Diego Padres and the Seattle Mariners face off on Wednesday at PETCO Park for game two of their interleague MLB series.
The San Diego Padres never got the bats going as they were beat by the Mariners on Tuesday. Yangervis Solarte had the Padres only hit as Justin Upton and Derek Norris were among the four that reached base via walk. Starting pitcher Ian Kennedy allowed four hits and four runs while striking out five over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 4-7 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Padres start James Shields who has allowed 99 hits and 46 earned runs while striking out 116 over 97.2 innings for a 7-2 record and a 4.24 ERA.

The Seattle Mariners didn’t need much offense on Tuesday as they shut out the Padres to get the win. Brad Miller and Mike Zunino each hit home runs and Austin Jackson had two hits as the Mariners socred five runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Mike Montgomery allowed just one hit and struck out seven going the full 9 innings to get the win and raise his record to 3-2 for the season. For Wednesday’s game the Mariners start Taijuan Walker who has allowed 90 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 83 over 85.1 innings for a 6-6 record and a 4.64 ERA.
San Diego is 7-3 in game two of a series, 3-9 in their last 12 interleague games against a team with a losing record, and 4-1 in Shields’ last five home starts. Seattle is 5-1 as an underdog, 9-4 in game two of a series, and 4-0 in Walker’s last four starts. Seattle is 2-4 in their last six games in San Diego.
Neither of these teams has been anything to rely upon and while Walker has been improving, Shields is the big money guy for a reason and the Padres bounce back with a win here.
