The Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers face off on Tuesday at Safeco Field in game two of their MLB series.
The Seattle Mariners battled toe-to-toe with the Tigers and for the first five innings on Monday but after that they had nothing left taking the loss. Logan Morrison hit a home run and Robinson Cano and Brad Miller each had two hits as the Mariners scored five runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out three over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-2 for the season. For Tuesday’s game the Mariners start Taijuan Walker who has allowed 91 hits and 44 earned runs while striking out 90 over 91.1 innings for a 7-6 record and a 4.34 ERA.

The Detroit Tigers blew the lead on Monday but then came back to take it for good as they won game one of their series with the Mariners. Yoenis Cespedes, Victor Martinez, J.D. Martinez, and Nick Castellanos each hit home runs as the Tigers scored 12 runs on 19 hits. Starting pitcher Alfredo Simon allowed eight hits and five runs while striking out four over 5.2 innings to get the win and go to 8-5 for the season. For Tuesday’s game the Tigers start Kyle Ryan who has allowed 27 hits and 14 earned runs while striking out 15 over 27.2 innings for a 1-2 record and a 4.55 ERA.
Seattle is 4-1 in game two of a series, 5-13 in their last 18 home games, and 5-0 in Walker’s last five starts. Detroit is 5-1 in their last five road games against a team with a losing home record, 1-4 in their last five games as an underdog, and 1-7 against the American League West. Detroit is 2-4 in the last six meetings of these two.
The Mariners have been a disappointment but Walker is improving as the season has gone on and I like their chances with him here.
