The San Diego Padres take the field with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in Wednesday action.
The San Diego Padres have not been able to sustain winning streaks thus far which means they are not a factor in the National League West right now. The Padres dropped a rain delayed 3-2 decision at Pittsburgh on Tuesday for their 7th loss in nine contests. Weather cut Tyson Ross’ start to two innings with Frank Garces and Marcos Mateo and Joaquin Benoit allowing runs. SD managed eight hits with Matt Kemp going 2-4 with a pair of RBI’s with Derek Norris and Yonder Alonso scoring.Andrew Cashner gets his first start against the Pirates in two years when he faces them on Wednesday. Cashner was at his best in a 2-1 win at St Louis in his last outing with a lone run plated on three hits in six frames.

The Pittsburg Pirates might be the biggest threat to St Louis if they can stay hot and limit the slow times. The Pirates continued to pick up ground in the National League Central with Tuesday’s victory that featured great pitching and a few clutch hits to earn their 9th win in eleven games. Starter Francisco Liriano gave up both runs on four hits through six innings while the Buccos produced a nine hit, two walk attack. Gregor Polanco, Andrew McCutchen and Jung-ho Kang drove in runs while Neil Walker scored twice. Charlie Morton toes the rubber for the second time against the Padres in 2015. Morton is looking for a rebound from a 5-2 loss to Cleveland with three runs given up on four hits and three BB over six innings.
San Diego are 2-6 in their last 8 overall and are 2-6 in their last 8 games on grass while the over is 7-1 in Cashner’s last 8 starts on grass. The under is 6-2-1 in Pittsburgh’s last 9 Wednesday games and the Pirates are 30-12 in their last 42 overall while going 30-12 in their last 42 games on grass. San Diego are 43-19 in the last 61 meetings. The Pirates have done just enough in this series and are hot so hopefully they have another one in them…
