The St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Mets face off on Sunday at Busch Stadium as they close out their MLB series.
The St. Louis Cardinals will be going for the weekend sweep on Sunday after beating the Mets again on Saturday. Randal Grichuk had three hits including two home runs, Jason Heyward had five hits, and Jhonny Peralta had two hits as the Cardinals scored 12 runs on 15 hits. Starting pitcher John Lackey allowed 10 hits and a run while striking out three over 7.0 innings to get the win and go to 8-5 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Cardinals start Tim Cooney who has allowed 20 hits and nine earned runs while striking out 17 over 18.2 innings for a 0-0 record and a 4.34 ERA.

The New York Mets were out of it early on Friday as they were blown out by the Cardinals. Michael Cuddyer had three hits including a home run and Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Ruben Tejada each had two hits as the Mets scored two runs on 12 hits. Starting pitcher Bartolo Colon allowed eight hits and seven runs while striking out five over 4.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 9-8 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Mets start Jon Niese who has allowed 111 hits and 42 earned runs while striking out 70 over 104.2 innings for a 5-8 record and a 3.61 ERA.
St. Louis is 5-0 against the NL East, 48-14 in their last 62 home games, and 2-7 against a left-handed starter. New York is 5-1 in game three of a series, 8-22 in their last 30 road games, and 2-9 in Niese’s last 11 starts as an underdog. New York is 17-38 in their last 55 games in St. Louis.
The Cardinals have been red hot at home but I don’t trust Cooney and while Niese can run hot and cold he is good enough in this spot.
