The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox face off on Thursday as they close out their MLB series.
The New York Yankees couldn’t get the bats going on Wednesday as they lost at home to the Red Sox. Carlos Beltran hit a home run, J.R. Murphy had two hits, and Mark Teixeira had a hit as the Yankees scored one run on five hits. Starting pitcher Luis Severino allowed two hits and two runs while striking out seven over 5.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 0-1 for the season. For Thursday’s game the Yankees start C.C. Sabathia who has allowed 143 hits and 72 earned runs while striking out 97 over 117 innings for a 4-8 record and a 5.54 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox have had a miserable year but they got a small reprieve on Wednesday beating the Yankees. David Ortiz hit a home run, Pablo Sandoval had two hits, and Alejando De Aza had a hit as the Red Sox scored two runs on four hits. Starting pitcher Steven Wright allowed four hits and a run while striking out nine over 8.0 innings to get the win to go to 5-4 for the season and Koji Uehara earned his 24th save. For Thursday’s game the Red Sox start Eduardo Rodriguez who has allowed 59 hits and 32 earned runs while striking out 56 over 66.1 innings for a 6-3 record and a 4.34 ERA.
New York is 6-1 following a loss, 22-8 in their last 30 home games, and 2-5 in Sabathia’s last seven games against the American League East. Boston is 6-14 in their last 20 games, 2-5 following a win, and 5-1 in Rodriguez’s last six starts. Boston is 2-7 in their last nine games against the Yankees.
With only three runs scored on Wednesday I look for an offensive explosion here and my free pick is over the total.
