The Miami Marlins open a weekend series with the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field on Friday.
The Miami Marlins are looking to avoid the National League East basement and possibly pass the Braves for third. The offensively challenged Marlins did plenty of scoring Thursday but struggled on the mound in a 9-8 defeat at Atlanta. Jose Urena and Adam Conley allowed eight runs over five frames with Bryan Morris allowed an 8th inning run to absorb the loss. Derek Dietrich homered and scored twice while Martin Prado knocked in three. Dee Gordon and Christian Yelich each drove in a pair of runs and scored three times. The Marlins send ace Jose Fernandez on the hill to oppose the Braves Friday. Hernandez has shown no ill effects from Tommy John surgery with a 4-0 record and 2.13 ERA over six starts.

The Atlanta Braves are clearly in a rebuilding mode but have really struggled to score and pitch lately. Despite the unlikely explosion at the plate in the series opener the Braves have still lost eight of eleven. Starter Matt Wisler was charged with five runs on nine hits through 5.1 frames before Andrew McKirahan allowed three runs in just an inning to blow an 8-5 lead. Adonis Garcia paced the Bravos 12 hit attack with a two run bomb while Nick Markakis knocked in three. Jace Peterson and Daniel Castro each scored twice as six players drove in runs and seven scored. Julio Teheran gets the ball in game two of the series with the visiting Marlins. Teheran comes off of a 6-2 win over the Phillies where he gave up both runs on eight hits in seven innings.
Miami are 1-7 in their last 8 overall and are 1-7 in their last 8 games on grass while the under is 18-7-2 in their last 27 road games. Atlanta are 5-16 in their last 21 games as an underdog and are 6-18 in their last 24 overall while going 6-18 in their last 24 games on grass. The under is 7-1 in Teheran’s last 8 starts versus Miami. Nothing etched in stone here so use caution…
