The Baltimore Orioles hope to keep their fading playoff hopes alive with a win versus the Tampa Bay Rays.
It’s make or break time for the Tampa Bay Rays who have to string the wins together or begin planning for next season. The Rays entered Sunday’s tilt with Kansas City with defeats in four of five before squeezing out a 3-2 victory. Nathan Karns allowed both runs on six hits over five frames with three relievers tossing four scoreless innings. TB logged nine hits and walked twice with Brandon Guyer going 3-4 with a homer and two runs while Kevin Kermaier went solo. The Tampa Bay Rays kick off their series at Baltimore with Chris Archer on the hill for the 4th time versus the O’s. Archer comes off of a 5-3 loss to Minnesota with four runs allowed on nine hits in six frames.

The Baltimore Orioles have been in a free fall and need to rack up wins and get some help to reach the postseason. The Orioles had nothing go favorably Sunday in a 6-0 defeat that saddled the team with losses in ten of eleven contests. Miguel Gonzalez gave up four runs on seven hits and a pair of free passes through 5.1 innings to fall to 9-11. The Orioles managed singles off the bats of Adam Jones, Chris Davis and Daniel Alvarez. Left hander Wei-Yin Chen draws the series opening start against visiting Tampa Bay on Monday. Chen defeated Kansas City 8-5 with three runs given up on ten hits and a walk in 6.2 innings.
The over is 5-0-3 in Tampa Bay’s last 8 Monday games while the Rays are 13-4 in Archer’s last 17 starts on grass and 16-6 in Archer’s last 22 road starts. Baltimore are 1-9 in their last 10 overall and are 1-9 in their last 10 games on grass while the under is 9-2-1 in their last 12 Monday games. The under is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings and is 6-1-1 in Chen’s last 8 home starts vs. Tampa Bay. It’s dangerous to back either squad in my view but if the O’s are going to win then perhaps Chen can get it done…
