The Oakland A’s and the Seattle Mariners face off on Sunday in Oakland as they close out their series of American League West teams.
The Oakland A’s fell behind early on Saturday and never caught up as they lost to the Mariners. Mark Canha hit a home run and Stephen Vogt and Billy Butler had two hits each as the A’s scored three runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Jesse Chavez allowed six hits and five runs while striking out two over 2.0 innings to take the loss and fall to 7-14 for the season. For Sunday’s game the A’s start Sean Nolin who has made just one Major League appearance in each of the last two season and both of those he was with Toronto.

The Seattle Mariners got out to an early lead on Saturday and then built on it as they beat the A’s in Oakland. Logan Morrison and Shawn O’Malley each hit home runs and Seth Smith had three hits as the Mariners scored eight runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Felix Hernandez allowed six hits and three runs while striking out nine over 8.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 16-8 for the season. For Sunday’s game the Mariners start Hisashi Iwakuma who has allowed 80 hits and 42 earned runs while striking out 74 over 89.2 innings for a 6-3 record and a 4.22 ERA.
Oakland is 7-2 in their last nine games as a home underdog, 2-6 in their last eight home games, and 1-6 in their last seven games against the American League West. Seattle is 6-2 in their last eight road games, 6-2 against a team with a losing record, and 11-5 in Iwakuma’s last 16 starts in game two of a series. Seattle is 5-1 in their last six games in Oakland.
