The Pittsburgh Pirates shoot for another win at Wrigley Field versus the Chicago Cubs.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are red hot and looking to lock up second in the National League Central and home field advantage in the Wild Card. The Pirates took a step in that direction with their 7th straight win in a 3-2 victory versus the Cubs Friday. Ace Gerrit Cole allowed a run on four hits over seven frames with Mark Melacon allowing a 9th inning run. The Buccos did their damage on seven hits with Starling Marte, Michael Morse and Cole driving in runs while Jordy Mercer scored twice. Left hander Francisco Liriano gets the ball in game two of their series at Wrigley Field. Liriano was outstanding in a 3-2 win at the Dodgers with both runs plated on five hits over seven frames.

The Chicago Cubs are battling for a Wild Card and have still won seven of eleven despite Friday’s home loss to Pittsburgh. The Cubs misses a chance to pick up ground in the Wild Card race with the offense unable to get going. Starter Jon Lester fell to 10-12 with a pair of runs on five hits with Pedro Strop allowing a run. The offense managed seven hits and walked three times with Starlin Castro and Addison Russell knocking in runs while Kris Bryant and Chris Denorfia scored. Veteran Jason Hammel toes the rubber against the Pirates in Saturday action. Hammel has struggled a tad the last three times out with a 2-0 record despite a 6.14 ERA.
Pittsburgh are 17-4 in Liriano’s last 21 starts and are 17-4 in Liriano’s last 21 starts on grass while the over is 15-5-2 in Liriano’s last 22 starts overall. Chicago are 21-7 in their last 28 home games and are 6-2 in their last 8 Saturday games while the Cubs are 37-17 in their last 54 overall. The under is 8-3-1 in the last 12 meetings in Chicago. I don’t see this as easy but I’ll back the hotter team…
