The Los Angeles Angels and the Seattle Mariners face off on Saturday in Anaheim as they continue their MLB series.
The Los Angeles Angels moved to within a half of a game of the final Wildcard spot in the AL as as they beat the Mariners on Friday. Albert Pujols and C.J. Cron hit home runs and Mike Trout had three hits as the Angels scored eight runs on 14 hits. Starting pitcher Garrett Richards allowed five hits and three runs while striking out eight over 7.0 innings to get the win and raise his record to 15-11 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Angels start Andrew Heaney who has allowed 89 hits and 35 earned runs while striking out 72 over 95.1 innings for a 6-3 record and a 3.30 ERA.
The Seattle Mariners just fell behind early on Friday and they were fighting uphill the rest of the way as they lost to the Angels. Kyle Seager, Logan Morrison, and Brad Miller each had two hits as the Mariners scored four runs on nine hits. Starting pitcher Vidal Nuno allowed nine hits and five runs while striking out four over 4.1 innings to take the loss and fall to 1-4 for the season. For Saturday’s game the Mariners start Felix Hernandez who has allowed 172 hits and 77 earned runs while striking out 185 over 195.2 innings for an 18-9 record and a 3.54 ERA.
Los Angeles is 4-0 in game two of a series, 7-2 in their last nine games, and 6-2 in Heaney’s last eight starts against a team with a losing record. Seattle is 5-2 following a loss, 11-6 against the AL West, 2-7 in Hernandez’s last nine starts in game two of a series. Seattle is 28-60 in their last 88 games against Los Angeles.
Felix Hernandez seems to always get it done even though his team always seems to come up short in the effort department and I expect the Mariners to get the win here.
