The Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds look to start the season on the right foot as both teams look to rebound off of very bad seasons last year.
The Phillies enter 2016 coming off a terrible season in which they locked up the league’s worst record, and don’t have a ton of hope for this year either with a very underwhelming rotation and a lineup that resembles most AAA squads. Philadelphia will send Jeremy Hellickson to the bump for their season opener as he will face off against Raisel Igelsias and while the former has had some success in the past and was a highly touted prospect at one point he has been a journeyman of late and has never really settled into ace status. The Hils do have Maikel Franco to look forward to this season though as the power hitting third baseman gets a full season in the MLB and with the stuff he demonstrated at the plate last year in a small sample size it gives Phillies fans a lot to look forward to in what should be an otherwise deflating season.

The Reds meanwhile are coming off a tough year as well in which they finished second to last in the National League and had only a better record than the Phillies. Cincinnati has undergone a facelift as the likes of Aroldis Chapman, Mike Leake, and Todd Frazier are on different rosters and guys like Brandon Phillips and Joey Votto are another year older but they are still a team that can hit the ball and will need to demonstrate that power here against the Phillies. Votto is coming off a very impressive season and will be leaned on heavily again this year, especially with Frazier now playing in Chicago and while Jay Bruce has some pop and Devin Mesoraco is a solid hitting catcher the team will live and die with Votto. While both teams may not have a strong season I think the Reds are in a little bit better position and with this being their home opener I fully expect the Reds to lay the wood and win this one with ease.
